Uniform Intermodal Interchange & Facilities Access Agreement
The only standard industry contract that governs the interchange of equipment between intermodal trucking companies and equipment providers (ocean carriers, railroads & equipment leasing companies). Participation in the UIIA increases operational efficiencies and eliminates the need to manage multiple interchange contracts and insurance filings.
UIIA currently has over 7,400 Motor Carriers and 53 Equipment Provider signatories and is utilized for approximately 95% of all North American intermodal equipment interchanges.
The Intermodal Interchange Executive Committee is the nine-member group of participating Ocean, Rail and Motor Carrier representatives that oversees the administration of the UIIA. Click here for list of Committee members and action items as it relates to the UIIA.
Participation in the UIIA
The UIIA program provides benefits to Motor Carriers and Equipment Providers that participate in the program as well as streamlines the administrative paperwork associated with the interchange process.
Binding Arbitration Process
All UIIA participants are afforded the opportunity to utilize the binding arbitration process under the UIIA as an alternative cost-saving method of resolving invoice disputes. Disputes involving per diem, maintenance and repair and equipment rental/use charges are acceptable under the binding arbitration process. Exhibit D of the UIIA outlines the specific guidelines for this process.
