Q-1: How do I participate in the UIIA program?

A-1: Equipment Providers wishing to participate in the UIIA will need to download the Equipment Provider Packet , which will provide you with instructions on what information is needed to participate in the program.  Should you have questions, please contact the UIIA office at 301-982-3400 ext. 352.

Q-2: How much does it cost to participate in the UIIA and how are my fees calculated?

A-2: Equipment Provider annual administrative service fees for participation in the UIIA program are calculated based on three components:

  • 1) Total Annual Volume – this figure is obtained from year PIERS Report for ocean carriers, the total volume reported by the AAR for railroads, or an annual census for non-traditional Equipment Providers (ie. leasing companies, marine terminals, etc.)
  • 2) Data Access Component – this figure is calculated based on how your company elects to access UIIA data (ie. EDI transmissions, Internet). Each access method is assigned a multiplier based on the level of labor involved in the process.
  • 3) Motor Carriers Serviced – this figure is calculated based either on the number of motor carriers at the time of billing that have named your company additional insured on auto liability or if your company elects to be “carrier specific” it is based on the number of carriers flagged for your company in the UIIA database.
  • Please contact the UIIA office if you would like to obtain an estimate of the fees to participate in the program.

Q-3: If my company is a participant in the UIIA, how can I check the status of a motor carrier?

A-3: You can check the status of a motor carrier at anytime by using the UIIA Web Validator. You will need to go to www.uiia.org/uiia.html and log in with your company’s SCAC Code and password. The password would have been provided to the UIIA contact on file for your company. Once in the Web Validator, go down under Truckers to Research. Here you will have the option to search by Motor Carrier company name, SCAC Code or Internal Identifier (if applicable and on file with the UIIA).

Q-6: How can I get a copy of my company’s current addendum to the UIIA or a previous version?

A-6: Currently, if an Equipment Provider wants to obtain a copy of its addendum, either the current version or a previous version, they need to contact the UIIA office either by phone or e-mail. In the near future we hope to add an enhancement that will enable Equipment Providers to access and download a copy of their addendum on-line.

Q-7: If I wish to change the terms of my addendum to the UIIA, what is required?

A-7: You will need to submit the changes your company wants to make to its addendum via e-mail to Debbie Sasko (debbie.sasko@intermodal.org) .

Staff will review the modifications and determine whether they require review by the Intermodal Interchange Executive Committee (IIEC), which oversees administration of the UIIA program. If the change requires the Committee’s review, the information will be sent to the affected modal Committee members to ascertain whether the language is acceptable. If acceptable, the language will go into effect thirty (30) days from the date notice is sent to UIIA motor carriers advising of the change. If the Committee finds the proposed language unacceptable, the Equipment Provider will be given the opportunity to hold a conference call with Committee members to address any concerns regarding the proposed language.

If the proposed addenda language does not require Committee review, the revision will become effective thirty (30) days from the date notice is sent to UIIA motor carriers advising of the change.

Q-9: How long after a motor carrier sends their information into the UIIA will the company be updated in the system?

A-9: Information received by the UIIA is entered as quickly as possible in the database. Many times it is necessary to contact the agent and/or motor carrier to obtain revisions to the information provided.

We do ensure that any insurance received regarding an expired policy is entered before close of business that day. All information that is currently effective is entered with 24 hours of receipt.

Q-10: Can I handle suspension of a motor carrier’s interchange through the UIIA?

A-10: The UIIA does have the ability to cancel at motor carrier at the Equipment Provider’s request. The Equipment Provider must confirm to the UIIA office that proper notification has been given to the Motor Carrier being suspended in accordance with the Agreement.

The request for suspension should include the Motor Carrier’s company name, SCAC Code, reason for suspension, and contact information for the person the Motor Carrier should call regarding the matter.

Please note that you also must confirm in the e-mail to UIIA that the Motor Carrier has been notified of suspension in accordance with the UIIA. We cannot proceed with entering the suspension in the UIIA system until confirmation of notification to the Motor Carrer has been provided.

The request should be sent via e-mail to the following UIIA staff:

The account will remain in a suspended status until we receive a request from your company to reinstate the account.

Q-11: How can I have the UIIA motor carrier status information provided to the facilities (ie. terminals, container yards, depots) that my company calls at?

A-11: The Terminal Service is a value-added service offered to UIIA Equipment Providers.

It provides interchange status information directly to facilities designated by the Equipment Provider. The data is sent via electronic data transmission, via ftp (file transfer protocol).

A full file is created each morning with hourly updates provided for the facilities throughout the day until 7:45pm (EST).

There is a minimal monthly fee associated with this service and the Equipment Provider is required to execute a Licensing Agreement authorizing the UIIA to provide this data to the designated facilities.

For more information, please contact Debbie Sasko at (301) 982-3400, ext. 352.
