Q-1: What insurance information is necessary for my insured under the UIIA?
A-1: The basic insurance requirements of the UIIA are as follows:
1. Auto liability policy for $1 million combined single limit covering any or scheduled/hired autos.
2. A commercial general liability policy for $1 million per occurrence.
3. The UIIE-1, CA23-17, TE23-17B endorsement must be made part of the auto policy.
4. The Equipment Providers that your insured does business with must be named additional insured on the auto liability. Please note that Equipment Providers may also require to be named additional insured on general liability and trailer interchange as well.
5. Other insurance requirements (ie. cargo, trailer interchange, workers compensation/employers liability) may be required by individual Equipment Providers.
Click here for more detailed information.
Q-2: Do I need to provide a certificate for each Equipment Provider my insured does business with?
A-2: No. You will only need to provide one certificate of insurance showing the UIIA as the certificate holder. Please note that the insurance certificate will need to show the Equipment Providers that your insured does business with as additional insured on the appropriate policies. We encourage insurance agents to use the UIIA certificate of insurance, UIIA Acord Form 22.
This form provides the specific language required under the UIIA. Agents not using the UIIA Acord 22 form may download a copy of the current Equipment Provider Checklist to provide the additional insured information for the Equipment Providers with whom their insured does business with. Click here for instructions on how to issue the single certificate with the appropriate additional insured information.
Q-3: Does the UIIA need to be named additional insured?
A-3: No, the UIIA is only the certificate holder and does not need to be named additional insured. The Equipment Providers with whom your insured is going to do business under the UIIA are the parties that require to be named additional insured on the appropriate policies.
Q-4: What is the UIIE-1, CA23-17 or TE23-17B endorsement?
A-4: The UIIE-1, CA23-17 and TE23-17B endorsement is the Truckers Uniform Intermodal Interchange Endorsement. This is a hold harmless endorsement and is required to part of the motor carrier’s auto liability policy. Any of the above endorsement forms are acceptable, however the endorsement must be the current version of the form. Insurance agents can provide either the actual signed endorsement or state on the certificate of insurance that one of the above acceptable endorsements is part of the auto policy. Please note if more than one auto policy is provided on the certificate, this endorsement must be endorsed to all the policies.
Q-5: How should the certificate holder be listed?
A-5: The certificate holder should be shown as follows:
| President | UIIA | |
| Intermodal Association of North America | or | 11785 Beltsville Drive, Suite 1100 |
| 11785 Beltsville Drive, Suite 1100 | Calverton, MD 20705-4048 | |
| Calverton, MD 20705-4048 |
Q-6: What is trailer interchange coverage?
A-6: Trailer interchange is a type of insurance coverage that many Equipment Providers require. Should your insured want to do business with these companies, you will need to include trailer interchange on the certificate of insurance provided on behalf of your insured. The trailer interchange policy needs to cover the physical damage to non-owned equipment (containers, chassis and/or trailers) while in your insured’s care, custody and/or control. Please note trailer interchange must cover comprehensive and collision. Policies covering only fire and theft are not acceptable. Click here for more information on Trailer Interchange.
Q-7: If I reference specific endorsements on the certificate of insurance, do I need to include actual copies of these documents with the certificate?
A-7: References to specific insurance endorsements on the certificate of insurance, other than the UIIE-1, CA23-17, or TE23-17B, must be included when submitting the certificate of insurance. Copies of these documents are requested to ensure that do not exclude or negate any of the coverage being required under the UIIA.
Q-8: How long does it take for my insured’s account to be updated once I provided the certificate of insurance?
A-8: Information received by the UIIA is entered as quickly as possible in the database. It may be necessary to contact the agent to obtain revisions to the information that has been provided. We do ensure that any insurance received regarding an expired policy is entered before close of business that day. All information that is currently effective is entered with 24 hours of receipt.
Q-9: Can I access my insured’s account on-line?
A-9: Currently insurance agents cannot access account information on-line, however we are developing a new process for on-line submission of insurance. This new enhancement will enable agents to update their insured’s account on-line and receive instant feedback if the information provided adversely impacts their insured’s account. The on-line submission of insurance feature is not yet available, but should be released by the second quarter of 2007.
Q-10: How will I sign up when the new on-line feature is available?
A-10: Agents are encouraged to pre-register for the new on-line submission of insurance feature now. You can do so by going to the UIIA homepage at www.uiia.org and clicking on the link to Pre-Register for UIIA On-Line Access and completing the registration form. Once you submit the registration form, you will receive an e-mail providing you with a user name and password. As soon as the new on-line feature is available, we will notify all agents that have registered via e-mail that they can begin using the new feature.
