Motor Carriers

Benefits of Motor Carrier Participation in the UIIA

The Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement (UIIA) provides Motor Carriers access to the equipment and facilities of railroads, ocean carriers and equipment leasing companies with a single industry standard interchange contract. Trucking companies can access more than 90 percent of intermodal movements, promote intermodal efficiency and increase their hauling business with this one contract – the UIIA.

Mission, Overview & Benefits of UIIA Participation

Mission

"To promote intermodal productivity and operating efficiencies through the development of uniform industry processes and procedures governing the interchange of intermodal equipment between ocean carriers, railroads, equipment leasing companies and intermodal trucking companies."

Overview
The Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement, or UIIA, is a standard industry contract between intermodal truckers/drayage companies (Motor Carriers) and Equipment Providers (ocean and rail carriers, equipment leasing companies). The UIIA was developed as a means of achieving a degree of uniformity in the interchange process.

IANA administers the only standard equipment interchange contract in the industry that outlines guidelines and rules for the interchange of equipment among ocean carriers, railroads, leasing companies and intermodal trucking companies. IANA acts as a clearinghouse for the collection and dissemination of motor carrier insurance information and supporting documentation necessary to meet the program requirements as well as specific needs of participating equipment providers.

The UIIA has more than 7,400 motor carrier and 54 equipment provider signatories and is utilized for approximately 95% of all North American intermodal equipment interchanges.

Benefits of UIIA Participation
  • Eliminates signing separate interchange contracts with each steamship line or railroad that participate in this industry standard interchange agreement.
  • Reduces the number of insurance certificates that a Motor Carrier is required to file with each Equipment Provider.
  • The UIIA web interface provides Motor Carriers the ability to check the status of their account with specific participating UIIA Equipment Providers before dispatching their drivers to the terminals in order to avoid unnecessary delays.
  • Motor Carriers can provide online access to their UIIA account to insurance agents giving the agent the ability to update their insurance information online 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
  • Automated Voice Response System allows your company to obtain a detailed status of your account 24 hours a day via fax.
  • Automatic thirty and seven-day Insurance Expiration reminders are sent out to participating Motor Carriers to advise your company of upcoming insurance renewals that are due.
  • Extended customer service hours from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Customer Service "Account Representatives" to provide continuity and a "personal" approach to resolving issues that may arise.
  • Access to IANA’s Street Interchange Application (SIA), which provides UIIA participants a web portal to facilitate street interchanges/street turns and captures an electronic record of the transaction. This is a no cost value added benefit of UIIA participation.
  • IANA’s Terminal Feed Service provides Motor Carrier interchange status information directly to terminals, container yards and depots on behalf of the UIIA Equipment Providers that subscribe to this value added service.
